Searchlight Pictures has officially unveiled the exclusive first look at its upcoming musical drama, Behemoth!. The highly anticipated feature film marks the long-awaited directorial return of Academy Award nominee Tony Gilroy and places actor Pedro Pascal into his first undisputed big-screen leading role.
The narrative follows Alex, portrayed by Pascal, a former child prodigy and third-generation studio musician who returns to Los Angeles after spending two decades performing symphonic work across the country. The story unfolds chronologically, leveraging a unique structural storytelling device: whenever Alex plays an opening cue from a fictional movie score, the music triggers sensory flashbacks that unpack the reasons behind his original departure from Hollywood. To capture the musical authenticity of a professional musician, Pascal underwent rigorous training to master the instrument, describing the technical fingerwork and bow posture as significantly more challenging than his intense physical preparation for Gladiator II.
Mirroring the movie’s deep thematic focus on orchestration, Gilroy has bypassed a traditional single-composer setup in favor of an experimental nine-person assembly known internally as the Behemoth! Collective. This high-profile collaborative roster includes Hollywood legends and contemporary visionaries such as Michael Giacchino, Alan Silvestri, James Newton Howard, Michael Abels, Emily Bear, Lukas Frank, Henry Jackman, Nami Melumad, and Brandon Roberts. The supporting ensemble cast features Will Arnett as Alex’s brother, Eva Victor as a fellow cellist and love interest, Olivia Wilde as his aggrieved ex-partner, and Hank Azaria as his father.
