The conch has been blown. Netflix has officially debuted the first trailer and look at its highly anticipated Lord of the Flies series, bringing William Golding’s dystopian masterpiece to the small screen for the very first time. Adapted by Jack Thorne (His Dark Materials, Enola Holmes) and directed by Marc Munden (National Treasure), the upcoming four-part event promises a harrowing and timely exploration of isolation, tribalism, and the loss of innocence as a group of stranded schoolboys slowly descends into barbaric savagery.

Following the classic narrative framework of the original novel, the series tracks a group of English schoolboys who survive a deadly plane crash and become castaways on a desert island. While the children initially attempt to govern themselves with civility, order quickly deteriorates as rival tribes form and a violent power struggle emerges. According to creator Jack Thorne, the timeless themes remain startlingly relevant today. “As a society, we’re having a conversation right now about boys,” Thorne shared. “We’re losing a generation of boys, and we’re losing it because of the hate they are ingesting — because it is an answer to their loneliness and isolation.”

To authentically capture the boys’ descent into madness, production took place deep within the dense, uninhabited rainforests of Malaysia. Munden and his crew utilized natural, unsettling locations to build an organically eerie atmosphere. To achieve the show’s dark and hallucinatory sequences, the team ingeniously shot “day for night” using an infrared camera, which naturally shifted the green jungle foliage into surreal shades of pink and red, adding a heightened layer of magical realism to the perilous setting.

Rather than casting seasoned Hollywood child stars, the production launched an open casting call led by acclaimed casting director Nina Gold (Game of Thrones). The resulting ensemble heavily features onscreen debuts, starring David McKenna as Piggy, Winston Sawyers as Ralph, Lox Pratt as the rebellious Jack, Ike Talbut as Simon, and Thomas Connor as Roger. Over 30 boys participated in the shoot, heavily encouraged by Munden to avoid overly dramatic theater-kid acting in favor of a raw, documentary-style naturalism as they interacted with the island environment.

The four-part Lord of the Flies series is officially scheduled to premiere globally on Netflix on May 4, 2026.
