The Green Lantern Corps is officially returning to the screen, but this time, they are trading in giant CGI space battles for a gritty, Earth-based murder mystery. HBO has released the first official teaser trailer for Lanterns, offering fans a thrilling glimpse at the highly anticipated DC Universe television series.
Explicitly distancing itself from the flashy, VFX-heavy space operas typically associated with the franchise, Lanterns leans heavily into a grounded, True Detective-esque atmosphere. The newly released footage establishes the core dynamic between the two intergalactic cops: a grizzled, weary veteran and an eager, unproven rookie. Kyle Chandler steps into the role of the legendary Hal Jordan, who is reluctantly acting as a “substitute teacher” to train Aaron Pierre‘s John Stewart, a new recruit desperately waiting for his chance to officially wield the iconic power ring.
The teaser highlights the fraught tension between the two heroes as they find themselves parked in the American heartland investigating a dark, localized murder. In one standout moment, Jordan bluntly tells Stewart, “Don’t get hung up on the jewelry, junior… You aren’t ready to get up in front of the class until the ring says you are.” Despite the show’s realistic, prestige-drama tone, the trailer still offers brief flashes of superhero spectacle, including a shot of Hal Jordan flying, a glimpse of his old suit, and humorous references to other alien Lanterns—including a “squirrel” that comic fans will immediately recognize as Ch’p.
Behind the scenes, showrunner Chris Mundy (Ozark) and DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran have crafted the series to function as a character-driven crime show first and a superhero show second. Rounding out the cast, Kelly Macdonald appears as Sheriff Kerry, a local law enforcement officer who is less than thrilled with the intergalactic duo interfering in her town’s investigation.
Serving as a crucial foundational piece for the new DC Universe’s “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters,” Lanterns is officially scheduled to premiere on HBO in August 2026.
