Summary

  • Reports indicate the brand’s first folding smartphone will feature an inner display comparable to an iPad mini
  • The device is rumored to ditch Face ID for a side-mounted Touch ID sensor due to screen thinness
  • Upcoming iOS updates will reportedly enable side-by-side multitasking without supporting native iPad applications

The foldable Apple iPhone is rumored to deliver an iPad-style user experience when opened. According to leaked information from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the tech giant is developing a dedicated multitasking interface for its upcoming horizontal-folding device.

According to Gurman, the Apple smartphone will feature an outer screen similar in size to a standard iPhone, unfolding to reveal a wider 4:3 inner display. Rumors suggest the device will run a modified version of iOS that supports side-by-side app layouts rather than natively adopting iPadOS. Developers will reportedly receive mechanisms to scale their existing applications for the larger canvas.

Hardware leaks suggest the inner display is too thin to house the standard Face ID sensor array, prompting a shift to a side-mounted Touch ID button. Despite this internal change, the brand’s signature Dynamic Island is expected to remain prominently on the cover screen alongside a front-facing selfie camera.
