Warner Bros. has officially released “Desert Chant,” the first single from the upcoming Dune: Part Three soundtrack. The collaboration features lead star Timothée Chalamet alongside Academy Award-winning composer Hans Zimmer.
Written and produced by Zimmer—who previously scored both prior installments in Denis Villeneuve’s cinematic trilogy—the track opens with Chalamet humming a solemn melody before gradually ascending into a full-scale Fremen war chant. The music sets a foreboding tone for the forthcoming film, which draws directly from Frank Herbert’s novel Dune Messiah. Set 17 years after the events of Dune: Part Two, the narrative explores the grim consequences of Paul Atreides’ galactic rule as emperor, following the character as his prescient visions grow increasingly clouded by power.
Speaking on his creative partnership with Villeneuve, Zimmer reflected on their mutual history with the original source material, “When two teenagers are deeply moved by the same novel that lets their imagination run wild, so wild that the mysticism and philosophy that captured their souls never lets them go, they will inevitably meet and become creative brothers,” Zimmer said. “For me, the beauty of working on Dune was that it would take me back into a time of being full of youthful imagination, where everything was true and the impossible was possible. I truly believe that Denis and I never stopped dreaming those dreams the book lit like fire in us teenagers, but now we had learned the craft and knowledge, having done a few films, to turn our mental images into reality.”
The concluding chapter sees returning cast members Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, and Florence Pugh, whose role as Princess Irulan is expanded. Anya Taylor-Joy reprises her role as Alia Atreides, joined by franchise newcomers Robert Pattinson and Isaach de Bankolé, who steps into the role of Paul’s former Fedaykin death commando.
Dune: Part Three officially arrives in theaters on December 18.
