Summary

  • The world’s first MoMA Bookstore has opened in Seoul, a result of a partnership with Hyundai Card
  • The store is located in Apgujeong and features over 1,100 titles
  • It sells exclusive MoMA-published books and curated design objects

In a significant cultural exchange, New York’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) has opened the world’s first dedicated MoMA Bookstore in Seoul, South Korea. The new venture is a result of a 20-year collaboration with Hyundai Card and solidifies Seoul’s growing status as a global art hub.

Located in Apgujeong in Dosan Park, the bookstore is a meticulously designed space that curates over 1,100 titles, including exclusive exhibition catalogs and books on contemporary art, photography, and design in addition to MoMA’s own catalogues. Unlike previous MoMA retail ventures, this outpost is solely dedicated to publications, creating a one-of-a-kind space for art enthusiasts. In addition to books, the store features iconic design objects and lifestyle goods from the MoMA Design Store, all handpicked to reflect the museum’s curatorial vision. The store also features a selection of the museum’s cult merchandise including, New Era caps, varsity-style sweaters, as well as limited edition design objects.

The partnership with Hyundai Card, which began in 2006, has evolved from sponsorships to a robust cultural exchange program. Through this collaboration, a “Hyundai Card MoMA Digital Wall” in Seoul mirrors the digital art being shown in New York in real time, connecting the two cities directly. The launch of the bookstore is a monumental moment, proving that MoMA is committed to reaching an international audience and that Seoul is a natural fit for a city that has become a dynamic center for culture and creativity.
