Swiss furniture manufacturer and design archive Vitra has reissued one of the last pieces to be designed by renowned French designer and engineer Jean Prouvé. The Antony Chair, reprised in its original relaxed form with bold red hardware, reintroduces the first-ever chair to be included in the Vitra Design Museum Collection to a new generation of design lovers.
Originally designed in the early 50s for the Cité Universitaire in Antony, France, Ateliérs Jean Prouvé won the bid to furnish 150 rooms at the era’s largest student residence in Europe. Resembling iconic pieces like the Compas Direction table, the chair features powder-coated legs in Prouvé’s signature red hue Rouge Corsaire, a transverse tubular brace system, and a pair of metal brackets to support the European pine seat. With its distinctive grain, the plywood shell is protected with a wax finish, further emboldening the natural grain.
It was 1984 when Rolf Fehlbaum, Chairman Emeritus of Vitra, acquired an original model, which became the inaugural chair to be incorporated into the Vitra Design Museum Collection. From that point onward, the Prouvé family and Vitra built a strong relationship, resulting in the a series of reissues of Prouvé beloved designs and a 2006 exhibition dedicated to his legacy.
