Italian furniture brand Acerbis is revisiting its archives and bringing back an armchair designed by Claudio Salocchi, which took on a futuristic form that typified the radical design of the time.

The “Palla” armchair was launched at the eighth edition of the Salone del Mobile in 1969. Made up of two sections – the seat and footrest – its modular nature allows the pieces to be slotted together, creating a sculptural centrepiece that challenged conventional furniture archetypes.

Salocchi has since been revered for his ability to create design that looked to the future, with many of his pieces lauded for bringing innovation to everyday home items. “Palla stood out for its radical concept, challenging conventional furniture design and exploring new ways of relaxation and conviviality,” the brand says. “Starting from the volume of a sphere, Salocchi deconstructs its form into a perfect balance of function and aesthetics.”

Now, as designs of the past continue to prove endearing to a new audience, Acerbis is bringing Salocchi’s Palla back under its “Acerbis Remasters” collection.

The integrity of the Palla’s original form has been preserved, and it will arrive in the same dimensions. For the base, there is a fixed and a swivel version, and a range of fabric options.

Palla will relaunch at this year’s Salone del Mobile furniture fair, at the Acerbis stand. Also showing new work there is Philippe Malouin, Olimpia Zagnoli, Francesco Meda, and David Lopez Quincoces (the brand’s artistic directors.

Salone del Mobile takes place from April 8 to 13, with the wider Milan Design Week kicking off this weekend.
