Utah State University’s Outdoor Recreation Archive is dedicated to preserving the history of outdoor brands through its expansive collection of outdoor magazines and catalogs, some of which date back 100 years — and all of which can be viewed at the physical archive in Logan, Utah, or on a free-to-view digital archive. Now, however, the Outdoor Recreation Archive is bringing its efforts full-circle with The Outdoor Archive: The Ultimate Collection of Adventure & Sporting Graphics, Illustrations and Gear, a book that spotlights some of the collection’s best imagery and design from over 70 brands.

Produced in partnership with Thames & Hudson, the book offers ten chapters organized by medium: outdoor and processed photography; collage; illustration; product photography; and typography. Also included are special essays by guest editors as wide-ranging as designer Jeff Staple and professional mountain climber Chris Burkard. Arc’Teryx, Snow Peak, Columbia, and Salomon are a few of the heavy-hitters included in the book, and there’s even a quartet of special sections that directly reproduce archival interior pages from A5 Adventures, Granite Stairway Mountaineering, L.L. Bean, and The North Face.

The Outdoor Archive: The Ultimate Collection of Adventure & Sporting Graphics, Illustrations and Gear is available for pre-order now and will release on May 13 for $65 USD.
