CNCPTS and New Balance are launching their latest collaboration, the 997 “Montage,” a sharp creative departure from their previous tonal 997 partnerships. This new design reinterprets the classic silhouette through the unapologetic, raw lens of early ’90s grunge and DIY creativity.
The “Montage” pays homage to the 997’s 1991 launch era with intentional design elements. The midsole features intentional scuffing for a worn-in appearance. Marker-style details throughout the shoe recall the hand-drawn zines and creative concepts that defined the ’90s. The color palette is a true montage, layering various textures and memories, while an exposed tongue provides a perpetually “in progress” look.
A key feature is the duality of the contrasting “N” logos. The lateral side sports a smoky, weathered finish, reminiscent of aged analog media. In sharp contrast, the medial side is darker and opaque, symbolizing the silhouette’s enduring evolution. The final result is a bold, expressive 997 that breaks new ground while preserving authenticity.
