“Terrace culture” is a British football subculture that emerged in the early 1970s, when fans – typically working-class men – who stood on the stadium terraces began experimenting with style. Early on, these fans were known as “casuals,” but over time the aesthetic evolved into a distinct mix of sportswear and luxury labels that still holds a strong influence on streetwear today.
In a special ode to this subculture, heritage brand Lyle & Scott has collaborated with global creative agency Fly Nowhere to create a streetwear collection inspired by terrace culture’s aesthetics.
The collection includes a range of apparel and accessories, each piece nodding directly to football nostalgia. There are two matching shell tracksuits – one in “Grey” and one in “Light-blue” tartan – both featuring branded banding along the arms and legs, reminiscent of early-2000s tracksuits. Another standout is the selection of sportswear jerseys, each with a bold design. One long-sleeve option features a countryside scene graphic with a sheep at the center. This also comes in a neon-inspired version with a “Purple-to-green” gradient finish. There is also a set of tartan jerseys that use a print created for Lyle & Scott’s 150th anniversary last year. The collection is rounded out with minimalist jackets with subtle branding, along with two caps.
Fly Nowhere’s creative influence is especially visible in the campaign imagery, which showcases a youthful group wearing the pieces in lifestyle settings reminiscent of the original movement.
The Lyle & Scott x Fly Nowhere collection is available now on Lyle & Scott’s website and at Fly Nowhere’s new Football Cafe shop in New York, which will open with an exhibition titled CLOBBER: 150 Years of Style Inspired by UK Subculture and Football.
