One of only a few black‑dial variants with diamond indices and original 18k “tile” bracelet.
Summary
- A Rolex ref. 6062 was sold for around $6.2 million USD at the Monaco Legends auction over the weekend
- This 18k yellow gold model now marks the third most expensive Rolex watch ever sold at an auction
The timepiece that recently achieved a sale price of €5,330,000 EUR (approx. $6.2 million USD) at the Monaco Legends auction is the exceptionally rare Rolex reference 6062 – a result that firmly placed it among the most expensive Rolex watches ever sold. This Moonphase Triple Calendar automatic, cased in 18K yellow gold and dating to circa 1953, marks a pivotal moment in Rolex history when the brand paired a complete calendar complication with the rugged reliability of its signature waterproof Oyster case.
The 6062 is one of Rolex’s rarest mid‑century complications, with roughly 350 examples believed to have been produced. Black‑dial variants with diamond indices occupy near‑mythic status among collectors; configurations such as the stelline star markers and the imperial “Bao Dai” example are especially prized. The present piece – one of only a handful known with this dial and diamond arrangement – ranks among the most coveted iterations of the reference.
This watch also carries important provenance, having appeared in landmark sales including Antiquorum’s Mondani Collection auction in 2006, and it is documented in key reference works on vintage Rolex wristwatches. Its return to the market after long private ownership, together with its excellent condition, rare configuration and original 18K yellow‑gold “tile” bracelet, made it a headline lot that attracted intense interest from seasoned collectors.
