Sabine Marcelis Scales Up Mathmos’ Iconic Lava Lamp
Transforming the nostalgic rocket into a sculptural form.
Summary
- Sabine Marcelis has unveiledher latest collaboration with lava lamp brand Mathmos
- The new collection includes a three-meter-tall lava column and a smaller lamp in a new hue
- Both editions launch on October 24
Dutch designer Sabine Marcelis has once again teamed up with Mathmos to reimagine the brand’s iconic lava lamp as a giant, floor-to-ceiling light sculpture.
The “Column Lava Lamp” stands at just under three metres tall, transforming the familiar hypnotic flow of liquid wax into a calm, architectural presence.
Made from frosted borosilicate glass and a matte white aluminium base and cap, each piece is produced to order in the UK and finished with Marcelis’ signature soft translucency.
Available in three pastel colorways — Bubblegum, Peach, and Honeydew — the Column Lamp translates Mathmos’ playful pop heritage into a minimalist, sculptural object. “I always wanted to design a giant lava lamp,” says Marcelis. “That dream is now becoming reality.”
“It has been a great joy to work with Sabine Marcelis on a lamp that is not only a technical feat but brings the Mathmos’ invention, the iconic lava lamp, into an entirely new dimension,” added Cressida Granger, CEO at Mathmos.
Alongside the Column, Mathmos will release a limited-edition Astro Lamp in Marcelis’ Honeydew hue. Limited to 1,000 pieces, the reissue applies the same frosted coating and mint-toned detailing to the original 1963 form.
“By simply stripping the design back to a single matt colour and introducing a haze matt finish overtop of the liquid bottle, a completely new effect was created,” Marcelis told Hypebeast at the time of her last collaboration with Mathmos. “It offers a new perspective on the way the lava flows around the bottle – with a soft glow that enhances the way the actual light disperses around the room also.”
Both editions will be available exclusively through Mathmos’ website, with the Astro launching October 23 and the Column following October 24, 2025.
