The Last Emperor of Vietnam's Watch Becomes Most Expensive Rolex Ever Sold at Auction
Smashing its pre-auction estimate of $1.5 million USD several times over.
A new record has been set by the legendary “Bao Dai” Rolex reference 6062, otherwise known as the personal wristwatch of the last emperor of Vietnam, Bảo Đại. Auctioned by Philips at the Geneva Watch Auction this weekend, the timepiece was initially estimated to sell for upwards of $1.5 million USD, but the final price dwarfed the estimate at a whopping $5,060,427 USD. This sale surpasses the record set just 12 months prior by another Rolex, the reference 4113 Split Seconds Chronograph, at $2,402,600 USD.
The triple calendar Rolex features moon phase in yellow gold, and is one of the three black dial models known to exist with diamond markers, and the only one to feature diamond markers at even hours. The last time the timepiece was sold was in 2002 for what was then the most expensive Rolex ever sold at auction.
