Summary

  • James Turrell will a new Skyspace installation, As Seen Below – The Dome, at the ARoS Aarhus Art Museum in Denmark in June 2026
  • The upcoming work will be the largest in the Skyspace series, measuring 40 meters wide and 16 meters tall

Light and space legend James Turrell is set to unveil his largest, and “most ambitious,” Skyspace installation to date.

Measuring 16 meters tall and 40 meters wide, the work, entitled As Seen Below – The Dome, will premiere on June 19, 2026 at the ARoS Aarhus Art Museum in Denmark, just in time for next years summer solstice.

Much like all of Turrell’s Skyspace’s, the installation envelops the domed space in a wash subtly shifting fields of color, while a circular aperture at its apex opens up to the sky. Meditative, even monastic at times, a Skyspace rewards a patient eye. By treating light as a sculptural material, Turrell harnesses the power of perception, fixing our attention color as an experience rather than just a visual quality.

“With As Seen Below I’m shaping the experience of seeing rather than delivering an image, the artist said on the project, which has been nearly a decade in the making. The architecture holds the sky close, so you recognize that the act of looking is the work itself.

The domed Skyspace chamber marks the completion of the ARoS Aarhus expansion, led by Danish studio Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects. Additional architectural features include a stepped seating around the rim of the installation, alongside a grass-clad exterior. A subterranean gallery and outdoor exhibition space has also been added onto the venue.

Head to the museum’s website to learn more about the upcoming installation.
