Japanese contemporary artist Yoshitomo Nara has teamed up to create a line of merchandise and the official poster for FireAid, a benefit concert which was held on January 30 at Los Angeles’ Intuit Dome and Kia Forum. Proceeds went to support communities recovering from the recent wildfires in LA as per ARTnews.

Orchestrated by music industry titans alongside Live Nation and the LA Clippers, the concert boasts an all-star roster, including Lady Gaga, Stevie Wonder, Sting, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Stevie Nicks, Katy Perry and Joni Mitchell. Longtime fans of Nara’s work, the Azoffs brought him on board early with help from dealer Tim Blum, recognizing his history of involvement in humanitarian causes.

Nara’s commitment to disaster relief—shaped by the 2011 Great East Japan earthquake and tsunami—made him an ideal collaborator for this initiative. The merchandise, showcasing his 2023 piece “Midnight Tears,” includes posters, T-shirts, hoodies, caps and totes. According to the event’s website, funds will be managed with guidance from the Annenberg Foundation, directed towards both immediate relief efforts and long-term projects aimed at wildfire prevention across Southern California.

The collection will be available online, allowing fans and collectors to contribute to the recovery while snagging exclusive items from one of Japan’s leading contemporary voices. While these charitable goods won’t rebuild homes or heal scorched land, they serve as a small yet poignant reminder of art’s capacity to foster solidarity and support.
The timing aligns with Nara’s exhibition at BLUM, featuring new bronze sculptures influenced by his reflections on the Great East Tsunami, alongside paintings and drawings in a series titled “My Imperfect Self,” running through March 22.
