The Chicago Bulls announced that it is set to retire Derrick Rose‘s No. 1 jersey next season.

The Son of Chicago’s number will mark the fifth to be retired in Bulls history following Jerry Sloan’s No. 4, Bob Love’s No. 10, Michael Jordan’s No. 23 and Scottie Pippen’s No. 33. Rose, who retired from the NBA in September 2024, stated that having his jersey on the rafters will solidify his place in the league. “That would be my way of getting close to the top 75, and I’m only saying that because it relates to the MVP,” he said via ESPN.

Rose added, “It’s only a handful, a small group that got that trophy back there. And to think that way of playing, the Chicago way of playing, is not in that 75, it makes you think about it a little bit or question it a little bit.”

The 36-year-old, who was the No. 1 pick in the 2008 NBA Draft, played a total of eight seasons with the Bulls before getting traded to the New York Knicks in 2016. He then went on to play for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Detroit Pistons and the Memphis Grizzlies before his retirement.

Rose became the youngest MVP in NBA history at 22 years old and six months, won Rookie of the Year and is a three-time NBA All-Star. He finished his career with 12,573 points and 3,770 assists in 723 games throughout 15 seasons.
