'The Batman 2' Director Matt Reeves Confirms Shooting Will Begin This Year Despite Delays

Also revealing that he hopes audiences “will be surprised by” the way the story turns out in the film.

Following the recent news that The Batman 2 will be delayed until 2027, director Matt Reeves spoke to Deadline on the Golden Globes red carpet that fans need not worry and filming will begin this year.

While not much can be divulged about the upcoming sequel surrounding the caped crusader, Reeves confirmed, “I can tell you that we’ll be shooting this year.” He adds later on in the interview that he is very excited for the return of the cast and hinted at “new people involved.” As for the plot Reeves said, “I think what I’m excited about is that we’re doing something where the story continues from, but I hope that people will be surprised by.” In the past, Reeves also confirmed that Colin Farrell will be reprising his role as the Penguin in the sequel and the character that the sequel is a part of a trilogy. Farrell has his own spin-off series at Max titled The Penguin which has been nominated for three Golden Globes this year.

The Batman 2 delay was announced just towards the end of 2024, pushing the film from October 2026 to October 2027. The film, which stars Robert Pattinson is the sequel to the $772 million USD grossing 2022 movie. Watch Reeves’ full interview below.
