Friday Night Lights‘ Kyle Chandler is set to portray Hal Jordan in DC and HBO‘s upcoming series, Lanterns.

The news was revealed by The Hollywood Reporternoting that the show will see Hal Jordan “reluctantly mentoring” John Stewart — a younger Lantern who was one of DC’s first Black superheroes. “The story sees the two characters investigating an Earth-bound murder with larger implications,” the report read, adding that the series will have a tone to similar to True Detective.

The actor who will play John Stewart is yet to be announced, however DC is supposedly interested in a “young, more fresh-faced actor” as an opposite to Chandler.

Chandler landed the role after DC initially planned to cast a movie star like Josh Brolin, who passed on the opportunity. There was also speculation that the likes of Chris Pine and Ewan McGregor were in the running for the role.

Lanterns is created by Chris Mundy (showrunner), Damon Lindelof and Tom King, who are writing and executive producing the series. Additional details such as the rest of the cast and a release date are unconfirmed as of writing.
