'Green Lantern' Receives Eight-Episode Series on HBO
Co-written by Chris Mundy and Damon Lindelof.
DC Studios is expanding its universe with the Lantern Corps. Green Lantern has received a straight-to-series order at HBO. The eight-episode drama is said to be led by Ozark‘s showrunner Chris Mundy alongside Damon Lindelof.
Based on the original Green Lantern characters, the series specifically highlights John Stewart and Hal Jordan from DC Comics. The green light for the series arrives five years after HBO Max developed a Green Lantern series with producer Greg Berlanti — who was behind Arrow-verse on The CW and one of the writers of the 2011 film starring Ryan Reynolds. In early 2023, DC Studios scrapped Berlanti’s Green Lantern show. At the time, Peter Safran said, “Greg’s vision was more of a space opera that he wanted to do. Our vision is more True Detective, more of a terrestrial-based investigation story. We all agreed to part ways.” Gunn and Safran said in a statement about the new series, “We’re thrilled to bring this seminal DC title to HBO with Chris, Damon and Tom at the helm. John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC’s most compelling characters, and Lanterns brings them to life in an original detective story that is a foundational part of the unified DCU we’re launching next summer with Superman.”
