CUPRA Elevates the Sporty SUV Sector With New Terramar
There’s also a special edition America’s Cup variant, limited to 1,337 units.
Spanish automaker CUPRA has just unveiled the Terramar, its latest vehicle aimed to elevate the sporty SUV market in Europe.
The premiere at the IMAX cinema in Barcelona mesmerized both live attendees and a global online audience with a captivating display that brought CUPRA’s world to life. The event, themed “There is no second,” drew inspiration from the America’s Cup sailing competition and culminated in the unveiling of the CUPRA Terramar. Adding to the spectacle was a film by renowned Spanish director J.A. Bayona, which highlighted the synergy between CUPRA’s philosophy and the America’s Cup. As CUPRA’s Brand Ambassador, Bayona emphasized that the film reflects his values—celebrating competitive sports, embracing self-improvement, evoking powerful emotions, and pushing boundaries—principles that align seamlessly with CUPRA’s ethos.
Named after the Autódromo de Sitges-Terramar – a historic race circuit in Barcelona – the Terramar is the CUPRA brand’s entry into the ever-growing sports-centric SUV market, one that combines practicality and every-day usability of sports utility vehicles, with performance and driver engagement as a key element. Multiple engines options are available, ranging from pure petrol to hybrid powertrains: the 2.0L “TSI” outputs 265 horsepower through a seven-speed dual clutch DSG transmission, while a mild-hybrid “eTSI” option mixes a 48V lithium-ion battery with a 1.5L engine, good for 150 horsepower. The top of the line plug-in “eHybrid” utilizes an enlarged battery park and can deliver up to 272 horsepower. Its capacity therefore allows the eHybrid to travel more than 100 km (or 62 miles) on the battery pack alone; an impressive figure as competitors recently average around the 30-mile mark.
Design-wise, the CUPRA’s looks draw on key design cues from the sports car market, particularly with the imposing front end. A large front intake grille dominates the fascia, with its heightened headlight line and deep chin completely encapsulating the front bumper bar. Side intakes that widen the front bumper also aid in the aggressive styling. A rear lightbar wraps around the back hatch, and pairs well with a protruding rear diffuser. You’ll also find a roof spoiler up top, bulging fenders, wheel arch and side skirt lines and more contributing to the Terramar’s bold styling. Optional 20” wheels and Akebono six-piston calipered brakes further push the performance angle.
Inside, the design language of the CUPRA Terramar blends practicality and sports even further. Deeply-bolstered front seats help during sharp cornering, while also providing the optimal seating position for both driver and passenger. CUPRA logos, embossed leather trimmings, a mix of metallics and more align with modern designs. The Terramar also features a 12-speaker high-fidelity audio system, in collaboration with Sennheiser for incredible sound.
A special edition America’s Cup variant will also be made available, commemorating the international sailing competition. Limited to only 1,337 units, the special edition Terramar will be distinguishable with exclusive America’s Cup emblems found lasered into the B-pillars outside, as well as in the black-on-black leather inside. 20” wheels and Enceladus Grey Matt paint will help the America’s Cup editions stand out.
The CUPRA Terramar is slated for production and delivery later this year.
