Bonhams to Auction Historic Porsche 911 Turbo "The Last Waltz"

Bonhams is set to auction a truly unique piece of automotive history: a 1998 Porsche 911 Type 993 Turbo Coupé, affectionately named “The Last Waltz.” This car holds a special place in Porsche‘s legacy as the last air-cooled 911 to leave the Zuffenhausen factory during the model’s original production run.

Commissioned by German author Clauss Vanderborg, this Porsche was meticulously crafted to his specifications by Porsche’s Sonderwunsch (Special Wishes) department. Finished in Ocean Blue, the car boasts an uprated 443 hp engine, identical to the Turbo S and a host of bespoke features, including an interior fully trimmed in Night Blue leather. Vanderborg, a friend of Ferry Porsche, dedicated the car to the company’s founder, with a plaque on the dashboard bearing an inscription in his memory.

Completed on March 27, 1998, the same day Ferry Porsche passed away, “The Last Waltz” symbolizes the end of an era for Porsche enthusiasts. Despite being finished just before Jerry Seinfeld’s Mexico Blue Carrera 4S, “The Last Waltz” remained at the factory for six months for customization, making it the final customer car of the air-cooled 911 lineage.

With just over 11,000 kilometers on the odometer, this car has been carefully preserved, passing through the hands of collectors in Japan, Belgium and the UK. Its historical significance, combined with its pristine condition, makes it one of the most collectible Porsches ever offered at auction. The car comes with a letter from Porsche confirming its status as the last air-cooled 911 produced.

Befittingly, this significant auction — set to take place at this year’s Goodwood Revival — falls on the 50th anniversary of the Porsche 911 Turbo. The sale will commence on September 7 at Chichester, Goodwood, with estimates as high as Estimate: £800,000 GBP or approximately $1,050,000 USD.
