This past weekend, fans of The Chi tuned in to watch the anticipated finale of season six. The show was confirmed for a seventh season earlier in May, so viewers shouldn’t lament the episode’s emotional send-off for too long. Fellow Chicagoan and multidisciplinary artist Rello (born Terrell Jones) was cordially invited to The Chi Fam Reunion, a summer function hosted by socially conscious party collective Everyday People. The cast of The Chi celebrated the season’s buzzworthy finale and the local South Side community during the event held at The Salt Shed. Hypebeast caught up with Rello for an inside look at the feel-good activation.

A daytime party embracing African diaspora, Black joy, pride and community through food and music, Everyday People has pierced the fabric of culture and championed diversity through an experiential and philanthropic lens. The word-of-mouth party, born in NYC, started as a local brunch before gaining global traction as the summer’s hotspot experience. The #ChiFamReunion was no exception, drawing a gorgeous, star-studded crowd to Chicago’s Salt Shed — creative personalities in film, TV and music gathered to celebrate The Chi’s finale.

Hypebeast met up with Rello at the start of his day as the fashion enthusiast carefully selected his ensemble, a berry-adorned button-up designed by his close friend and collaborator Joe Freshgoods, Story MFG’s utility cargo pants and Fear of God Birkenstocks, before heading out to the anticipated event. The Chi Fam Reunion evoked the same warmth and familiarity as a living room during a one-year family reunion. Guests could sneak away to an Instagrammable lounge area for a quick photo capturing the area’s ‘70s-inspired ambiance. For small bites, Chicago-based barbecue restaurant Smokey’s appeased appetites in the main lounge area, nodding to the show’s fictional eatery of the same name.

With VIP access to the Chi Lounge, Rello had the exciting opportunity to meet members of the cast in person while enjoying drinks and live music — a dopamine-boosting survey of Amapiano, hip-hop and R&B curated lovingly by DJs mOma, Sean Mac, PeeWee, Sky Jetta and Nosike. Rello spoke with fan favorites of the show, including Emmy winner Lynn Whitfield and Grammy-nominated R&B singer and actor Luke James.

Ahmad Nicholas Ferguson, Jason Weaver, Hannaha Hall, Michael V. Epps, Shamon Brown Jr., Birgundi Baker and more were in attendance alongside notable tastemakers and musicians, such as Taylor Bennett, who performed a rap set. Embodying Everyday People’s ethos of connecting diasporic narratives and aesthetics through music, food and dance, The Chi Fam Reunion honored the end of season six while celebrating residents home to Chicago’s South Side.
