While the life of John Summit is a loud one – filled with plenty of sold-out arenas, Las Vegas day parties and headlining festival sets – it’s also got its fair share of silence.

“I’ll be on stage performing in front of 100,000 people and then 30 minutes later I’m in a silent hotel room by myself in the dark,” Summit shares. “It’s comfort and it’s chaos.”

Comfort in Chaos, fittingly, is the name of Summit’s just-released debut album, which arrives a few weeks after his sold-out Madison Square Garden show, in which the DJ played three sets and opened for himself with an intimate throwback set.

Many of the set’s standout tracks stem from Summit’s solid string of singles from the past four years, which solidified him as a key player in the new era of electronic music. “Deep End” went viral on TikTok mid-pandemic in 2020, despite Summit’s fear that it wouldn’t land due to there being no place open to dance. During the pandemic, Summit also “went all in,” in his own words, on songwriting, committing to writing every day for roughly two years. “Human,” the single that really put Summit on the map, transpired as a byproduct of this grind, hitting number one on the US Dance Radio Charts and over 50 million streams.

“The reaction to that song was huge, and it really gave me the confidence that I could make an album,” the 29-year-old adds.

Since then, Summit feels like his life has been leaning toward the chaos component as of late, as he continues to rapidly rise in the EDM space and beyond, gaining major cosigns, landing headlining festival slots and securing coveted day club residencies. “The past few years at large have been chaotic and crazy, and I’m just trying to get used to it.”

“I think that combination [of my house background with my songwriting background] is why a lot of my songs really stick with people.”

After “Human” came big hits “La Danza, ”In Chicago” and “Show Me,” which all cemented Summit’s success; but it was “Where You Are” – which appears on Comfort in Chaos – that hit big once again, likely due to the dreamy combination of HAYLA’s heavenly vocals and Summit’s production.

The album features other recently released tracks like “Shiver,” “Eat The Bass,” “Go Back” and “Resonate” and signals an expansion of Summit’s scope, expanding beyond strictly tech house into more pockets of house, dance and electronic music. “I used to make strictly underground tech house stuff – beats with no vocals — so being able to combine my house background with my songwriting background is cool, he notes. “I think that combination is why a lot of my songs really stick with people.”

“My beats aren’t perfect. My mixdowns aren’t perfect. But I am human and I want my music to sound like there’s a real person behind it.”

Summit also sought to expand the raw humanity of the album into its visuals as well, something not super common for electronic musicians. “The visuals in electronic music are oftentimes not too exciting, so I wanted to subvert the norm,” says Summit, who enlisted visual artist Marcos Alvarado to spearhead the album’s visualizers and cover artwork. Summit says he aligns closely with Alvarado’s ethos, and “knew he’d interpret the songs in a way that felt intentional to both of us.”

In his own words, Summit calls the album “one long journey,” – literally, as he made the entire album as one long audio file, and then chopped it up after the fact. If he has one ask, it’s that you listen from start to finish and not on your phone.

“Please just listen to it on a high-quality sound system.”
