Renegade Running and Fractel Salute Their Communities with Collaborative Hat Capsule
High-tech running headwear imbued with a rich, community-first backstory.
Independent, Oakland-based running store Renegade Running was founded on two guiding principles: first, to channel the city’s revolutionary spirit into a diverse, open and welcoming running community, and, second, to offer the most interesting running products on the market today, produced by indie brands that share that same fierce belief in the freedom and joy that running can bring. Now, it’s putting both of those pillars on display by collaborating with the Australian headwear purveyors at Fractel for a heartfelt and high-tech collection of hats.
Available in black, tan and white, the hats are from Fractel’s core M-series line and feature several technical details. Their base fabrics are moisture-managing Polartec Power Dry and Bluesign-certified recycled fabric, while the co-branded details on the front and rear are done up in 3M Scotchlite 5087. The standard strap is replaced with an easily adjustable bungee enclosure.

The most core detail of all, however, arrives on the underside of the brim: a custom graphic designed by Chicano artist and graffiti writer Pemex, who’s also lent his touch to Renegade Running’s LA Marathon collection in past months. “For me, the beauty in the project is the coming together of seemingly disparate groups of people to make something for the community to represent with pride —proud of the product, the design, being an activist, being a runner,” says Renegade Running founder Victor Diaz, noting that both he and Fractel founder Matt Niutta come from non-traditional backgrounds (before starting their businesses, Diaz was an education and Niutta a construction surveyor).
