Few footwear brands can go from the runway to the Rockies in consecutive weeks. For Timberland, tapping into the high-fashion cultural zeitgeist one week and the great outdoors the next is its bread and butter – or, in this case, caviar and trail mix.

Timberland stomped all over Paris Fashion Week a few weeks back, partnering with Louis Vuitton on a reworked signature 6-Inch Boot. A long-time staple in the hip-hop sphere, models rocking the LV-monogrammed Boot down Pharrell’s Western-inspired runway marked an official convergence of hip-hop and high fashion.

“We were never designed as a fashion brand,” Timberland’s director of advanced concepts and energy Alex Dardinski told Hypebeast. “We started as a purely functional brand and we have had this unique proposition between work and outdoors that we’ve been innovating and refining for 50 years now.”

Dardinski believes it’s the outdoor imprint’s attention to detail and careful mastery of its craft that has allowed The Boot to break into the high-fashion space. “When we create authentic, functional products, culture adopts it.”

On the heels of its cameo in LV’s show, Timberland is now digging its heels back into its storied DNA with the new Motion Range Collection, reminding us that the great outdoors was where it all began for the outdoor-meets-workwear brand. The collection introduces the Motion Scramble and Greenstride Motion 6 Hiker, each of which prioritizes comfort, traction, and mobility. Timberland dipped into its extensive archive to pull design inspiration for the Motion Range collection. Dardinski explains that three retro Timberland silhouettes specifically played a pivotal role in crafting the Motion Range footwear: Timberland’s 78 Hiker, Euro Hiker and GT Scramble.

“All of these shoes were milestones along the way that led us to this new footwear,” Dardinski explained of the three mood-boarded models. “People may not remember all three of those shoes, but they’ll likely recognize one.”

Dipped in Timberland’s signature wheat color, the Motion Scramble Mid Lace-Up Waterproof Hiker leads the range. Equipped with expertly crafted functional features for the most treacherous of terrain, the Motion Scramble also prioritizes comfort, introducing a TimberCush zonal dual-density midsole that promises supreme energy return and responsive comfort, with the boot’s outer rim midsole maximizing support and its soft center midsole offering optimal cushioning.

Fully waterproof, the Motion Scramble is crafted primarily from Timberland’s premium waterproof leather, with CORDURA fabric uppers and TimberDry technology confirming no water gets in. The shoe also introduces TimberGrip lug outsole technology, providing unbeatable traction and holistic stability as well as a natural rubber Greenstride sole, which rounds out the design and doubles down on the comfort front.

The Motion Range drop also sees the latest edition of the mobility-maximizing Greenstride Motion Hiker, the Greenstride Motion 6 Hiker. The low-top silhouette prioritizes rebound and comfort and offers just the right amount of lightweight support for city-wide gallivanting and more low-impact outdoor adventures. The imprint’s commitment to sustainability is echoed in the Motion 6 Hiker as well, with the shoe showcasing uppers crafted from Timberland’s renewable Leather and ReBOTL fabric made from recycled plastic. A water and stain-resistant Defender Repellent System treatment system finishes off the silhouette, providing utmost protection against whatever unpredictable environmental elements you’ll encounter.

Elsewhere, the collection also features a lineup of apparel, fashioned with the same functionality features in mind. The Men’s Caps Ridge Waterproof Motion Jacket – also dipped in the label’s infamous wheat colorway – is equipped with breathable waterproof and windproof DryVent fabric, as well as underarm vents, a chin guard, and an adjustable hood.

“Culture has found us as a brand because of our authenticity. We have such a strong DNA rooted in our original boot and we continue to reference that,” Dardinski explained to a room of wheat-leather wearers. “We’re all wearing wheat right now. That’s become our color. It’s these consistent signifiers – the leather, the sustainability, the “rugged” profile – that we’ll continue to reference and stay true to.”
