Rare Heuer Carrera Sunray DX To Be Auctioned by Sotheby’s
Said to be one of the only known examples to ever come to auction.
Sotheby’s has revealed that a rare example of the Heuer Carrera Sunray DX is set to become available at auction during the debut of ModaMiami — an event that will showcase roughly 50 other timepiece lots alongside a significant range of rare cars and luxury goods.
Notably, this rare watch gets its name from Sunray DX, which was one of the largest oil companies in the ’60s and a significant sponsor of automotive racing during the period. The company eventually started an autosport team in 1966, in partnership with Don Yenko, best known for the creation of the “Yenko Camaro,” a high-performance version of the Chevrolet Camaro.
As for the timepiece, it was created just a year later, in 1967, specifically to celebrate Sunray DX’s L-88 Corvette-powered race team. What makes this lot even more significant is its provenance, with the seller, Gary Goss, being an original member of the Sunray DX team.
Bidding for the timepiece is set to begin on February 29 and will run through March 12. Sale estimates are set as high as $25,000 USD, thanks to the watch being the only known example to come to auction, with the only recent acquisition of the Sunray DX being a private sale to the TAG Heuer museum.
