PlayStation 2 Officially Sells 160 Million Units, Remains the Highest-Selling Console in History
Sony announced the updated sales numbers in celebration of the PlayStation’s 30th anniversary.
The Sony PlayStation 2 is still the highest-selling console in history as Sony provided an update to the gaming system’s sales.
The entertainment giant commemorated PlayStation‘s 30th anniversary with updated sales numbers for its consoles, confirming that the PlayStation 2 has sold a total of 160 million units. Sony’s last official announcement dates back to March 2012 with 155 million units — marking a 5 million increase in sales despite the end of the console’s production in 2013.
Running behind the PlayStation 2 is the Nintendo DS, which was first released in 2004 and has sold 154 million units, followed by the Nintendo Switch with 146 million units.
Within the PlayStation ecosystem, however, Sony’s PlayStation 4 ranks at the second-highest-selling console with 117 million units, followed by the very first PlayStation at 102 million units and the PlayStation 3 with 87 million units.
