Norm Architects Creates Restaurant Within Floating Nordic Art Installation
The Michelin-starred “Iris” has opened its doors inside the floating “Salmon Eye” by Kvorning Design.
Norm Architects has revealed its latest restaurant interior, designed for the Michelin-star Iris restaurant in Hardangerfjord, Norway.
Located inside the Salmon Eye installation – created by Kvorning Design – the Iris restaurant features calming, soft interiors that are intended to contrast with the striking steel exterior.
Because the existing architecture features undulating curves, much of the space needed to be filled with bespoke furniture that can fit within arches, and snugly against walls. Lighting is soft, and many of the materials used are natural. The color pallette is muted but warm, to contrast iwth the stainless steel scales covering the outside of the ellipsoid structure.
Tactility is a key component of the design, with textured walnut wood, plush carpets, and upholstered furniture forming a “homey” setting. Because of its location – which, despite its expansive view of the ocean, can often be subject to harsh Nordic weather – it was necessary to pay attention to details that would make the restaurant feel cosy and tucked away from the elements.
“The natural textures and flowing lines of walnut wood, combined with bespoke furniture and soft, curved elements, bring a sense of comfort and harmony to the space,” the architects add. “This thoughtful integration of organic materials not only enhances the tactile experience but also connects guests to the surrounding natural beauty, reinforcing the restaurant’s commitment to sustainability and sensory immersion.”
Spatially, the architects took the open room and divided it up into smaller spaces. “This piques curiosity, ensuring that guests discover the beauty of the restaurant gradually, rather than all at once upon entry,” they say.
