Dingyun Zhang’s Debut Collection Is Rooted in Global Social Research

Mongolian-Chinese, Dingyun Zhang, has been a growing name in the fashion landscape – known for his signature expansive take on puffer garments. Notably, the designer has been thrust into the light from his work with YEEZY as a former designer. But outside of Kanye West’s label, Zhang has collaborated with the likes of Moncler and Marni alongside dropping his own special releases. Now the designer is moving beyond smaller drops with the unveiling of his debut collection. 

As his first full collection, the Fall/Winter 2024 offering builds upon his key outside-the-box puffer design techniques and stylings. The lot is made up of puffer coats, vests, oversized pants, cotton hooded jackets, tops, bags and more. But how the collection got its legs was through a focus on extensive social research and the exaltation of heritage – which are focal elements of Zhang’s creative practice.

With the debut, Zhang reinterprets adventure tools and pieces like ice fishing tents, survival rubber suits and life vests. The assortment of pieces is then livened by hues from Acid House, aquatic life and the U.S. Navy First Aircraft Carrier crew jackets. Without question, the lot is wide-reaching in design practice and inspiration. Highlights from the collection include pieces like the Quilted Volume Jacket and Reflex Cocoon jacket, which remake the Terlig Coat alongside the “Bronze” Quilted Volume Jacket and 3D Cargo Ski Pants.

“We wish to translate an ancient civilization, discontinued and mystified from antiquity,” says Dingyun Zhang.
