RM Sotheby's to Auction 20 Hurricane-Damaged Ferrari Race Cars
As part of its Monterey Car Week offering.
RM Sotheby’s has unveiled a historic collection of Ferraris, known as The Lost & Found Collection and while many of the vehicles in the collection have seen better days, they still present a unique opportunity to acquire rare examples of their favorite models.
As RM Sotheby’s puts it a “caretaker with the proper vision and resources,” could even restore the most badly damaged examples.
The collection is set to be presented during the highly anticipated Monterey Car Week on August 17 and will be displayed in a barn recreated by RM Sotheby’s to reflect the same hurricane-damaged setting they were originally discovered in. Altogether, the collection is estimated to fetch as much as $20 million USD, which comes out to $1 million USD per vehicle on average.
What makes this collection of Ferraris, which have lain dormant for decades, special, is that many of them once graced world-renowned races like Le Mans, Targa Florio, and Mille Miglia. Surprisingly, the collection also includes a Ferrari that once belonged to royalty, namely the 1956 Ferrari 250 GT Coupe Speciale, owned by King Mohammed V of Morocco.
Rob Myers, the driving force behind RM Sotheby’s, expressed the significance of the find: “While a select group of Ferrari collectors knew about the existence of these extraordinary cars, the rest of the world remained unaware. This represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for enthusiasts to acquire these iconic Ferraris… It is the first time that RM Sotheby’s has presented a barn find collection of this magnitude to the market.”
While all noteworthy in their own right, a few highlights of the collection include a 1965 Ferrari 275 GTB, expected to bring the highest bid and the 1954 500 Mondial Spider Series I by Pinin Farina that caught fire during a race in the 1960s, possibly the most storied of all but also the most badly damaged — which could turn out to even be a selling point.
