MTV on Tuesday revealed the full list of nominations for the 2023 Video Music Awards, set to take place on September 12 at Newark, New Jersey’s Prudential Center.

Taylor Swift leads the way with eight total nominations, followed by SZA, who scored six nods. Both artists are nominated in the esteemed Video of the Year category, for “Anti-Hero” and “Kill Bill,” respectively. Alongside them, Doja Cat’s ”Attention,” Miley Cyrus’ ”Flowers,” Nicki Minaj’s ”Super Freaky Girl,” Olivia Rodrigo’s ”Vampire” and Sam Smith and Kim Petras’ ”Unholy” are also up for the top trophy.

Beyoncé received one nomination, as she did not put out any videos surrounding her Renaissance album. The chart-topper is up for Artist of the Year, alongside Doja Cat, Karol G, Shakira, Minaj and Swift. For the first time since the category was introduced in 2017, all of the nominees for the coveted 2023 trophy are women.

Swift (“Anti-Hero”) is also nominated in the Best Direction category, alongside Kendrick Lamar (“Count Me Out”). Both artists have previously won the title for music videos they directed or co-directed. Swift took the trophy for “The Man” in 2020 and “All Too Well (The Short Film)” in 2022. Lamar, meanwhile, won the category for “Alright” in 2015 and “Humble” in 2017.

Notably, 35 artists received their first nomination this year, including Ice Spice, Flo Milli, PinkPantheress, Boygenius, GloRilla and Reneé Rapp, among others. The VMAs also added a category this year for Best Afrobeats, with nominations for Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, Davido and Musa Keys, Fireboy DML and Asake, Libianca, Rema and Selena Gomez, and Wizkid and Ayra Starr.
