YNW Melly Double Murder Case Ends in Mistrial After Jury Deadlocks

YNW Melly’s double murder case has resulted in a mistrial after jurors were unable to come to a final decision on Monday, The Miami Herald reported first. The 12-member jury was deadlocked for three days of deliberation and ultimately unable to reach a unanimous decision even after Broward Circuit Court Judge John Murphy asked the jurors to keep deliberating twice.
“These types of decisions, they’re hard decisions,” Murphy told the court. “We very much appreciate the fact that you gave us the time because we’ve been here a long time. We understand that. You gave us the time and you did your best effort to [bring about resolution] but unfortunately that wasn’t able to happen.”
In 2018, Melly, whose real name is Jamell Demons, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Anthony “YNW Sakchaser” Williams and Christopher “YNW Juvy” Thomas Jr. A trial began in June over four years after his arrest.
The mistrial doesn’t mean that the 24-year-old rapper has been found not guilty and the Broward State Attorney’s Office reportedly didn’t comment on the case but said they would be retrying Melly on the double murder charges.
Prosecutors will now be able to have another trial within the next 90 days. If found guilty, Melly could potentially face the death penalty.
