World-renowned filmmaker J.J. Abrams speaks out about what fans can expect for Mattel‘s Hot Wheels film. The upcoming film will be one of many projects from the toy company that is currently in the works. The news of Abrams officially signing on to produce the live-action film at Warner Bros. arrived in April. Now, Abrams is giving fans a hint as to what to expect.

Abrams revealed to The New Yorker in regards to the Hot Wheels film, “For a long time, we were talking to Mattel about Hot Wheels, and we couldn’t quite find the thing that clicked, that made it worthy of what Hot Wheels — that title — deserved.” He added, “Then we came up with something…emotional and grounded and gritty.” Writers Dalton Leeb and Nicholas Jacobson-Larson are reportedly penning the script while Jeremy Renner, who was previously attached to the project, is no longer involved.

Mattel is currently gearing up for the summer blockbuster release of Barbie starring Margot Robbie. Next on the docket is a Barney-inspired film that stars Daniel Kaluuya, which seeks for a more mature audience. While no further information has been revealed about Hot Wheels, it is certain that Mattel is determined to create franchises of its own that tugs on this generation’s nostalgic heartstrings.
