Studio Weave's Terracotta Seosaeng House Keeps Tradition Alive
Found in South Korea, the home offers a 180-degree view of the Eastern Sea.

London-based architecture firm Studio Weave molds its innovative touch with Korean tradition to structure a multi-generational family home dubbed as the Seosaeng House in South Korea. Up on a cliff, the house allows for a 180-degree view of the Eastern Sea as the name itself translates to ‘the brightening East’ or ‘new life.’
To seamlessly coincide with the rocky landscape, Seosaeng House is formed out of three rectangular forms with terraces that rise a meter at a time. The full exterior is tiled with fluted concrete slabs in washed terracotta which beautifully changes tones from smokey salmon to cavern clay according to its surroundings and time of day.
Walking up the concrete stairs, existing greenery and boulders shape the intial courtyard leading up to the entrance where you can leave your shoes on traditional long stones in respect to Korean customs. A concealed steel bar extending from one end to the other is to keep the food preservation tradition alive. Expansive sliding doors open up to the main living space complete with cushioned seating in one corner while an oval dining table and open plan kitchen fill the other end. A cavity in the middle contains a set of steps to various points in the house such as the central courtyard, bedrooms, ensuite and bathroom. While the layout of the house is perfect for holding functions to celebrate various festivities, a second living room perched on the upper level allows for seclusion with a view of the house all the way down to the harbour.
“We were inspired by Korean colours and textures and looked to create a home that demonstrates how traditional domestic architecture could be reimagined through a contemporary sensibility,” says Je Ahn, Director of Studio Weave. “Favouring warm and subtle materials, Seoseang House is of its place and climate, where every window is a moment to view the tranquil surroundings.”
