Jekeun's SS24 Collection Studies the Concept of Coming of Age

Exploring the rebellious attitudes in the modern-day schooling system.

London-based brand Jekeun is consistently looking to push boundaries and explore the inner psyche of fashion. The brand was founded by Jekeun Cho, with the designer born in South Korea with Japanese heritage. He then took his studies to China, before moving to the UK to focus on fashion design. His looks often combine experiences from home along with the multicultural brilliance of England’s capital — and more of the same has been done throughout Jekeun’s all-new Spring/Summer 2024 collection.

This latest collection from the imprint is the fourth under Jekeun Cho’s creative direction and it continues to navigate his introspective approach to contemporary design. As a whole, the line looks to embody a moment of escapism from ordinary life, while also symbolizing the spirit of a young boy coming of age, as he departs from the expectation of accepted behavior within modern-day society.

The concept of coming of age in the collection is conceptualized through the use of deadstock school uniforms that are reworked with new approaches on the waistlines and top buttons, symbolizing the rebellious attitude of pubescent teens looking to break away from the confined rules of education.

Meanwhile, faded aesthetics are used across breathable shirts, while double buttons are often used, taking inspiration from the Japanese graduation tradition of giving the second button to a high school crush. Additional prints such as tartan and pin-stripes are included across a melange of oversized blazer silhouettes, while distressed denim is introduced and interpreted with flamboyant prints, and even reworked into an overlapping skirt.

Corduroy fabrications — seen on a highlighted vest design — enter the collection, paying homage to Cho’s passion for motorbikes, and scrap metal is reworked into a selection of wearable pieces, nodding toward the concept of searching for scrap metal.
