British DJ, composer and multi-instrumentalist Aphex Twin surprised fans with his first new music in five years. The artist, whose real name is Richard James, dropped off the gleefully chaotic song “Blackbox Life Recorder 21f.”

The song comes off of what will be a four-track EP entitled Blackbox Life Recorder 21f / In a Room7 F760, slated to release on July 28 via Warp Records. Widely regarded as one of the most influential electronic musicians today, fans have been waiting for the follow-up to 2018’s Collapse.

“Blackbox Life Recorder 21f” was first posted on Soundcloud but quickly removed. It was then shared to streaming services on Wednesday, June 21.

Last week, Aphex Twin made a live appearance, performing at Sónar 2023 in Barcelona. As for the rest of the summer, the DJ will be headlining London’s Field Day Festival in August, though no additional shows have been scheduled just yet.
