In an effort to bring more usernames back into the mix.

Twitter has announced it’ll be doing away with accounts that haven’t posted within the past few years. The platform already has a policy for potentially inactive accounts, which dictates that users should log back in about every 30 days to avoid the risk of being removed.

Many users have been asking for a widespread inactive account purge for some time in order to bring more usernames back into the mix. Despite these requests, Twitter hasn’t ever undertaken a larger sweep of dead accounts until now.

“We’re purging accounts that have had no activity at all for several years, so you will probably see follower count drop,” Elon Musk tweeted on Monday.

While a few users expressed concern about the deletion of active accounts and their historic tweets, Musk assured them that the accounts would simply be “archived,” while stressing the need to “free up abandoned handles.”

It’s still not totally clear what usernames the archived accounts will be given once they’re deemed no longer active.
