Spotify Shutters Standalone Audio App, Spotify Live
The app previously known as Locker Room was acquired in 2021.
Spotify has shared that it’s permanently shutting down its live audio app, Spotify Live. The app was originally titled Locker Room. Its name was changed to Spotify Greenroom in 2021 when Spotify became owner via its acquisition of its creator, the startup Betty Labs, for $71,000,000 USD. A few months later, it was renamed once again to Spotify Live.
The goal of Spotify’s acquisition was to “evolve and expand Locker Room into an enhanced live audio experience for a wider range of creators and fans,” the platform said, according to Music Ally.
Under Spotify Live, the streaming service launched several radio shows across sports, music and pop culture. Eventually, Spotify Live was consolidated into the main Spotify app. Last year, however, Spotify Live began canceling many of its radio shows due to low listenership.
“After a period of experimentation and learnings around how Spotify users interact with live audio, we’ve made the decision to sunset the Spotify Live app,” a Spotify spokesperson said to Music Ally. “We believe there is a future for live fan-creator interactions in the Spotify ecosystem; however, based on our learnings, it no longer makes sense as a standalone app.”
“We have seen promising results in the artist-focused use case of ‘listening parties,’ which we will continue to explore moving forward to facilitate live interactions between artists and fans,” they said.
