Grey and Navy Grace the MADE In USA New Balance 998
The first 998 to appear since Teddy Santis was named creative director of the MADE in USA line in 2021.

New Balance is preparing to bring the 998 back later this year in celebration of its 30th anniversary, and part of the celebration will be its inclusion in the Teddy Santis-directed MADE in USA line. The 998 has long been one of the models that New Balance proudly produced at its US factories in Maine and Massachusetts, but this marks the first time it’s hit the market since Santis became the creative director of NB’s domestic product line in 2021 — and there are a few notable differences to be seen.
Under Santis, MADE in USA footwear often features ultra-shaggy suede and that’s the case here. The vast majority of this 998’s real estate is covered in grey suede, a material choice that’s offset by white mesh, navy suede and even a hit of earthy tan on the midfoot logo. MADE in USA branding can be seen on the insoles, and midsoles house ABZORB foam inside an ENCAP shell to complete the look.
Only time will tell if the 998 will enjoy the same jolt of energy as other popular MADE models like the 990v2 and 990v3, but this crisp and classic color scheme provides for a compelling start. The official date of release has yet to be announced, but you can expect it to touch down on the New Balance webstore in the coming weeks with a MSRP of $200 USD.
