Jon Rahm Is Victorious at the 87th Masters Tournament
The fourth Spaniard ever to wear the green jacket.
Jon Rahm is the champion of the 87th Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club, winning the second major championship of his career and his first green jacket with a score of 12-under par (65-69-73-69). Rahm becomes just the fourth Spaniard ever to win The Masters, doing so on the 40th anniversary of the famous Seve Ballesteros’s second Masters victory, a day which also happens to be the late golfer’s birthday.
On Sunday Rahm started two strokes behind American Brooks Koepka, and made his first birdie of the afternoon on the par-4 third hole. He took the solo lead when Koepka bogeyed the par-3 sixth, and from that point forward never relinquished his advantage, adding birdies on holes 8, 13 and 14 where a two shot swing took place between Rahm and Koepka.
On Thursday morning the 28-year-old Rahm began his tournament by double bogeying his 1st hole, but then came roaring back to post a 7-under par 65 and hold a share of the lead with American Brooks Koepka and Norwegian Viktor Hovland by the end of the day. Although Koepka took a lead playing early on Friday morning before wind and rain arrived, Rahm staved off the difficult conditions Friday and into Saturday morning to post 3-under 69 and stay within striking distance. Koepka failed to increase his advantage in the third round, where him and Rahm matched each other with 73s.
Brooks Koepka ended up finishing 8-under par with a final round 75, tied for second with three-time Masters champion Phil Mickelson who took a run at another green jacket and made history as the oldest player to ever finish in the top 5 at the tournament at the age of 52.
