Jay-Z Drops Reworked Version of “Empire State of Mind” Featuring Gil Scott-Heron
Debuting the track at his recent show in Paris.
Jay-Z has returned with a surprise new single, a reworked version of his 2009 hit with Alicia Keys, “Empire State of Mind.”
The new song is called “New York (Concept de Paris),” named after the city in which it was debuted. Hov performed the track at his concert for the Louis Vuitton Foundation’s Basquiat x Warhol retrospective in Paris on April 14, dropping the track on streaming services just a few days later.
The remix combines Jay-Z’s 2009 single with the 2010 Gil Scott-Heron track “New York is Killing Me.” The influential jazz singer and poet wrote “New York is Killing Me” just a year prior to his death in 2011.
In addition to the “Empire State of Mind” remix, Jay-Z delivered renditions of songs from across his discography, including “Can’t Knock the Hustle,” “Never Change,” “Can I Live” and “U Don’t Know.”
