Brain Dead founded their Fabrications branch in the heart of Silverlake partly as a way to fill the void left by the long revered Army Surplus store, along with providing a pop-up space to host unique exhibitions that centered around craftsmanship. For the latest showcase, the Los Angeles-based label has worked with design studio Space Available on a new exhibition entitled The Mycelium Network.

Following Space Available’s recent case study, Radical Fungi, the studio continues its focus on promoting mycelium as a future material. By working with an international community of artists, designers, environmentalists and content creators, Space Available and Brain Dead present a range of furniture and sculptural objects that seeks to address the damaging effects of our ‘throw-away’ culture.

“Here at Space Available we very much believe that biomaterials are the future,” the studio said in a release. “And having an opportunity to work with cult brand Brain Dead helps amplify this further, hopefully leading to positive impacts within the cultural and design landscape.”

Collaborative products include Space Available’s Mycelium Meditation Chair, footballs created in collaboration with Max Lamb using fungi waste from UK-based fungal discovery platform Really Clever, mycelium table lamps by Bewilder, Reishi-based speakers from Myco Audio and Baltimore Loth, and organic mushroom stools from British designer Dean Edmonds.

Each object is 100% natural and biodegradable. The Mycelium Network is currently on view at Brain Dead Fabrications in LA.
