Following up on last year’s reports that Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney has been cast alongside Dakota Johnson for Sony PicturesMarvel film, Madame Web, fans will now be excited to know the character she is playing.

According to reliable industry insider Jeff Sneider, he announced on his The Hot Mic podcast that Sweeney will be in fact “the second” incarnation of Spider-Woman in Madame Web. In the Marvel comics, her character, Julia Carpenter, is the second in-continuity Spider-Woman within the MCU. Sneider notes that Julia’s involvement in Madame Web is an important aspect of Sony’s plot for the upcoming film. Prior to this information, it has been unclear which version of Madame Web Johnson will be playing – either Cassandra Webb or Julia Carpenter. In the comics, Julia is the second and current Madame Webb, succeeding the late Cassandra Webb. Since Sweeney is reportedly playing Julia Carpenter, it is likely Johnson has taken the role of Cassandra.

If Sneider is correct, this means that Julia Carpenter will make its live-action debut when Madame Web releases in theaters. The film stars dam Scott, Emma Roberts, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps and Zosia Mamet alongside Johnson and Sweeney. The official synopsis of Madame Web reads, “The film will be an origin story of the clairvoyant, whose psychic abilities allow her to see within the spider world.” Madame Web is currently slated to release in theaters in February 2024 with production just wrapping up earlier this January.
