PUMA Taps NOAH for Three Made-in-Japan Clyde Sneakers
With uppers composed of materials from Japan’s only expert tannery specialized in Suede leather.
After partnering with Lavenham on a line of contemporary quilted outerwear, NYC-based imprint NOAH has joined forces with PUMA for a collaborative range of the German sportswear label’s famous Clyde sneakers. The collection, made in Japan, spotlights the path-forging evolution of Japanese craftsmanship — specifically, its “equal embrace of centuries-old heritage and innovative modernity,” according to the official preview — on three new sneakers.
Across the lineup, the silhouette’s upper is composed of a material made by Japan’s only expert tannery specialized in Suede leather, and its color dye is crafted through age-old (and painstakingly long) processes. The crossover Clydes feature gold-foiled iconography, a dual-stamped tongue and white soles, letting vivid suedes, in Brown/Green, Blue/Yellow and Green/Blue colorways, prevail.
Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, the PUMA Clyde has proved itself as a timeless sneaker among fashion and sports alike. In the ’70s, basketball player Walt “Clyde” Frazier, who was famous for both his on-the-court moves and his signature off-the-court style, approached PUMA for a custom pair of Suedes. At the time, the brand rearranged the original shoe’s construction with a lighter and wider shape, stamped the athlete’s name on its side and called it the official Clyde sneaker.
