adidas Eyes the Future in the Y-3 ITOGO
Featuring interchangeable midsoles.
adidas Y-3 has always had one foot rooted in tradition and the other flying towards the future. The latest release, the Y-3 ITOGO, is a beautiful exploration on what the future of footwear can look like. Perhaps what’s most immediately apparent is the shape of the sneaker, which favors an angular black or white upper on a neutral base that oozes of Japanese aesthetic sensibilities.
Following in line with Yohji Yamamoto‘s visionary approach to design, the shoe is made with only five components: elastic straps, knitted upper, BOOST midsole, Rubber Cupsole and thread. The name itself, “ITOGO”, is a combination of the Japanese word for “Thread” – “Ito” – and “Five” – “Go”.
Rather than using glue, the Primeknit upper is stitched to the tooling and supported by two thick straps atop a plush BOOST midsole for a comfy fit. The shoe was purposefully conceived as a meditation on the lifecycle of footwear, resulting in a silhouette that can be fully dismantled if the owner decides to cut the threads.
Additional highlights include branding on the straps, along with Yamamoto’s signature on the tongue and bottom of the gum outsole. For those looking to purchase, the adidas Y-3 ITOGO is available in white and black at adidas, the CONFIRMED app and select global retailers.
In case you missed it, solebox and adidas reunite on the UltraBOOST 1.0 and Ultra 4D.
