'Magic: The Gathering' Unveils First 'Lord of the Rings' Cards
The One Ring, Gandalf and a map of Middle Earth come to the world of ‘Magic.’
Magic: The Gathering is coming to Middle-earth, linking up with Lord of the Rings for a special set of cards dubbed Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth. Part of Magic‘s ever-expanding “Universes Beyond” series, the collaboration was originally announced in 2021 and now we’ve been given a first look at some of its cards via IGN.
The One Ring is present as a powerful legendary artifact card, and beloved wizard Gandalf makes two appearances as Gandalf the Grey. Each Gandalf the Grey card boasts the same stats and special abilities, but each features different artwork: in one, he’s seated and holding his staff as well as Glamdring, his sword, while in the other he’s battling the Balrog. There are also five different land cards, each of which spotlights a key area of Middle-Earth’s map.
Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth is a fully draftable card set that’s legal for play in Magic: The Gathering‘s “modern” format. It follows in the footsteps of some other custom Magic collections, like Street Fighter, Fortnite and Warhammer 40K. The set will release on June 23, and is available for pre-order now, with prices ranging from $16.67 USD for a starter kit to $440.27 USD for a collector booster box.
