James Gunn recently took to Twitter to announce that he will be directing the upcoming Superman: Legacy for DC Studios. The film is set to kick off Gunn and Peter Safran‘s new DC multi-universe, “Chapter One, Gods and Monsters.”

Last Fall, Gunn announced that he was penning a new Superman movie for Warner Bros. Discovery. The upcoming Superman: Legacy is set to tell the story of Superman’s journey has he reconciles with his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent from Smallville, Kanas. Gunn confirmed that this story will focus on a younger Superman, under the age of 40.

In the announcement tweet, Gunn prefaced the film with an emotional anecdote regarding his relationship with his dad, “I lost my Dad almost three years ago. He was my best friend. He didn’t understand me as a kid, but he supported my love of comics and my love of film and I wouldn’t be making this movie now without him.” He added, “It has been a long road to this point. I was offered Superman years ago — I initially said no because I didn’t have a way in that felt unique and fun and emotional that gave Superman the dignity he deserved. Gunn continued to explain his reasoning behind the plot of the upcoming film, commenting on how it centers “around Superman’s heritage — how both his aristocratic Kryptonian parents and his Kansas farmer parents inform who he is and the choices he makes.”

The film kicks of the studio’s first phase of the multiverse and is set to release in theaters on July 11, 2025. Take a look at Gunn’s full tweet below.
