Coolio was still working on music when he unexpectedly died at the age of 59 in September 2022, and now fans will get a chance to hear that music as his estate has announced a posthumous album release. Titled LONG LIVE COOLIO, the album will feature guest spots from fellow West Coast veteran Too $hort, Treach of Naughty by Nature and more.

LONG LIVE COOLIO is the rapper’s first project since 2009’s From the Bottom 2 the Top, and its first single, the Too $hort-supported “TAG (You It)” kicks off its rollout. The single sees the two California OGs trading expectedly raunchy rhymes over a bouncing, funky beat from Coolio’s longtime friend and collaborator DJ Wino, and its accompanying boxing-themed music video is jam-packed with vixens, cash and hijinks. Over his career, Coolio placed six songs on the Billboard Hot 100 list, with “Gangsta’s Paradise,” his career-defining song spending three weeks at the #1 spot in 1995 and 38 weeks on the list in total. However, he hadn’t cracked the list since 1997, when “C U When U Get There” peaked at #12.

Before his death, Coolio had been staying busy — recording music, finalizing a deal for a 10-show residency at Las Vegas’ Westgate Resort & Casino and preparing to bring his cult-favorite “Kwanzaa-Bot” back to Futurama for the show’s forthcoming reboot on Hulu. Since Coolio had already recorded his lines for the show, the “Kwanzaa-Bot” episode will still run when Futurama returns later in 2023.

Expect “TAG (You It)” to hit streaming services on Friday, March 17, and stay tuned for more info on the album’s launch date as soon as it’s made available.

Elsewhere in music, Pharrell has revealed the lineup for Something In the Water 2023.
