A.P.C. Pre-SS24 Dives Into the Essence of 1970’s Music
Inspired by Debbie Harry and Lou Reed.
Just last week, Jean Touitou’s A.P.C. revealed the latest round of its quilt collection, which repurposes leftover fabrics into cozy yet eye-catching pieces. Now the brand has shifted its attention back to its mainline clothing offering with the reveal of its new Pre-Spring/Summer 2024 collection – where it dives into the essence of 1970’s music.
Overall, the collection moves between the spaces of everyday minimalist styles and chic glamping. However, the aforementioned style codes have been influenced by two musical acts. For womenswear, Touitou looked to Debbie Harry, who was the finger of the group Blondie. “When I see photos of Debbie Harry, I always wonder: how can she be so desirable without ever being objectified? In other words, how is it possible to take sartorial provocation so far without an ounce of vulgarity,” asks Touitou. “Maybe it’s an innate taste for perfect proportions and the ability to be someone else. And, as if all that weren’t enough, she made incredible music, propelled by a wonderfully ambivalent voice.”
By looking to Harry, womenswear pieces harbor a light-hearted everyday elegance that is seen through floral dresses, Western-leaning denim, black wool crepe dresses, calm tees and more. When thinking about menswear for the pre-collection, Touitou continues the musical inspiration by looking to musician and songwriter, Lou Reed.
“Everyone has copied, is copying or will copy Lou Reed’s clothing style,” explains Touitou. “Designing clothing inspired by him is mainly about trying to rub shoulders with beauty – like he did – with very little means: just two chords (D/G) and strikingly simple words to describe a world of shattered souls.” With it, menswear takes on a minimalist character that can be seen through pieces like faux leather jackets, water-repellent trench coats, stonewashed black denim and more.
